LANDSCAPING IN AMAGANSETT, NY
Sand, Salt, and Deer — In That Order
Amagansett runs from the ocean dunes across the Napeague stretch, and the soil reflects it: sand with very little organic content and almost no water-holding capacity. Plants that would thrive two miles inland struggle here simply because there is nothing for roots to hold on to.
Dune areas carry their own protections, and vegetation on and around them is doing structural work — removing it destabilises the dune itself. Add deer pressure that rivals Montauk, and the successful Amagansett landscape is one that accepts the site: build soil deliberately, plant salt- and drought-tolerant material, and protect everything through establishment.
Build the soil first. Everything else is downstream of that.
WHAT WE DO HERE
Every Service We Offer, Available in Amagansett
One company for the whole property. That matters more than it sounds — when the same crew sets the grade, builds the hardscape and plants into it, there is nobody to blame later and nothing falling between trades.
Landscape Design and Installation
Full design and installation — beds, specimen planting, sod, screening and the structure that holds a property together year-round.
Masonry and Hardscaping
Paver and bluestone patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens and fire pits, built on a base that holds.
Yard Drainage Solutions
French drains, dry wells, catch basins and regrading — designed around what is actually under your ground, not a standard detail.
Seasonal Property Maintenance
Spring and fall cleanups, ongoing grounds care, gutter clearing and power washing on a schedule that keeps ahead of problems.
Grading and Excavation
Site grading, excavation and drainage correction. The work nobody sees and every other job depends on.
Property Management
Full oversight for seasonal and second homes — openings, closings, contractor coordination and eyes on the property between visits.
LOCAL CONDITIONS
What Amagansett Properties Actually Deal With
Common on Amagansett properties:
- Beds that dry out within hours of watering
- Plants failing to establish in pure sand
- Persistent deer browsing through the growing season
- Wind and salt burn on exposed foliage
Call us sooner rather than later if:
- Erosion or blowouts on or near a dune
- Vegetation loss destabilising a dune face
- Repeated total loss of new plantings
- Any clearing proposed within a dune protection area
None of this is unusual for Amagansett — it is simply what this part of the East End asks of a property. The difference is whether it gets designed for at the start or repaired afterwards.
Questions We Get From Amagansett Homeowners
Can anything grow in sand this poor?
Yes, but you have to build the soil rather than fight it. We incorporate compost and organic matter to create actual water- and nutrient-holding capacity, then plant material adapted to fast-draining ground. Skipping the soil work is why so much Amagansett planting fails in year one.
What are the rules around dune vegetation?
Dune vegetation is protected because it holds the dune together, and removing or disturbing it is restricted. Practically, work near a dune is about stabilising and supplementing planting rather than clearing it. We will tell you what is and is not possible before design.
How bad is deer pressure in Amagansett?
Bad enough to plan around rather than react to. We lead with genuinely resistant species, protect new plantings physically through the first seasons while they are most vulnerable, and add repellent programmes where a client wants material that deer like.
Does the Napeague stretch behave differently from the village end?
Yes. Napeague is more exposed, sandier still, and closer to salt on both sides. The plant palette narrows considerably out there. Closer to the village, with more shelter and better soil, there is a lot more latitude.
Is irrigation essential here?
On new planting, effectively yes, at least through establishment. Sand this free-draining will not carry a plant through a dry spell on its own. Once soil has been built up and the right material is established, demand drops significantly.
